Editorial Review for Le Perigord – by Bryan Miller

The Scene
Traditionally the lair of well-heeled burghers from the East Side, Le Perigord has been splendidly rejuvenated, both in setting and cuisine. Gone are the dull hotel-like colors and unflattering lighting--peach is the new leitmotif. Soft leafy sconces, splays of flowers and well-spaced tables add to the comfort level. The dining room has a palpable vitality that is now attracting couples who don't remember the Eisenhower administration. Service here remains among the best in the city, and the most welcoming.

The Food
Jacques Qualin, formerly of Jean-Georges, has tossed the rich quenelles into the river in favor of splendid dishes like terrine of salmon and spinach tinged with coconut; roasted veal chop aromatic of anise and hyssop (a mint-like plant) and tender venison with pickled beets and huckleberries. Desserts are simple and traditional, but terrific--and if chocolate makes your blood run hot, the molten cake here is a case of hypertension.

I have never had rude service in a restaurant of this (supposed) high caliber. This was the first. Bland, uninspired food coupled with rude, unattentive service. The quality of the decor, food and overall atmosphere does not live up to the snobbish attitude received from all. I've eaten in 1,000 better restaurants. Save your time and money and go elsewhere!

arrived for an early dinner at 6:15pm...front room was still very empty but we were taken toward the kitchen area and seated in a backroom. supposedly in a nice corner seat. upon sitting down in our "nice corner seat," we looked around and noticed that the entire room was filled with minorities only while the outside was empty. we waited a bit to see if this trend would change, but finally after more and more people came into the back (all minorities) we spoke up. the manager denied there was any disciminatory seating and pointed to a few token individuals scattered in the front room...no apologies, just shifty eyes and runaway feet upon being confronted. food was average. not a good experience. prefer 26 seats in alphabet city...not a stuffy environment...just excellent food w/o the airs.

Pros: fast food

Cons: see above..too long to list
