Editorial Review for Alice Mae's Soul Food Cafe – by Jerome Langston
The Scene
Expansive windows add to an open, airy feel in the dining area, where abstract art hangs atop striped paneled walls. Linen-clothed tables and lighted candles set a romantic mood, while the small yet bustling bar area (situated near the entrance) provides a safe haven for the buppies more interested in talking than listening the weekend jazz.
The Food
Entrees are typical soul food with a do-it-yourself aspect. Alice Mae's famous chicken comes prepared a variety of ways: fried, smothered, and baked. You choose. Smothered pork chops, thickly cut and very tender, can be seasoned with readily available hot sauce and/or vinegar. The signature seafood dish is veritable feast: two fish filets, five shrimp, and a meaty crab cake-best when grilled. Sides run the Bible belt gamut, from tender, pork-seasoned collards to sweet-buttered candied yams. Meal portions are also typically Southern. Requesting a doggy bag isn't frowned upon, it's expected.

Alice Mae's Soul Food Cafe is no longer there. Looked for it and could not find it. The street name has changed.
