Editorial Review for New Belmont – by Jerome Langston

In Short
Nestled beside a record shop, this restaurant-bar features exposed-brick walls throughout, while framed photos of utensils decorate the dining area downstairs. The moderate-sized upstairs bar has pinball, a pair of pool tables, big-screen TV and quirky mixed-media artwork by resident bartender Brady. Twenty-somethings come casually dressed for drinks, dining and the occasional rock show. The American menu downstairs ranges from coriander-crusted tuna loin to a simpler Belmont bacon-cheddar burger.

I had the unfortunate experience of trying out this place for brunch. I knew this was not going to be on top on my list when I was told that the place was "out of bloody mary's". I thought this was a brunch staple. I had a very greasy meal -- it was one of the specials of the day. The boneless fried chicken was smothered with some kind of sausage sauce. The side dish of fried green tomatoes was dripping in oil. And the added scrammbled eggs was served cold. I thought of rescuing this horrible experiencing by ordering a glass of champagne. Alas, this too, was bad! Not one tiny bubble and served in room temperature. Never again.

Pros: none

Cons: pepto bismol

They take what's fresh and make it part of their menu. The downstairs restaurant is very pleasant--I've taken many friends there for dinner and brunch. They put interesting twists on food--it really tantalizes your palate. The upstair bar is fun, and they often have live entertainment of great diversity. I've enjoyed all my visits there. You can get anything on their restaurant menu in the upstairs bar, until abou 10 PM. Then they have bar food, quite good.

Pros: Ghent location makes parking easy

Cons: Really noisy in the bar when the band is crankin'
