Editorial Review for Luna Maya – by Michele McCole Moss
The Scene
Two Bolivian sisters run this small colorful gourmet eatery, where the decor is upscale but casual. Everything is made from scratch, including the margaritas and sangria mixed up behind the multicolored, mosaic-tiled bar. There's no folk art or mariachi bands--it's all about the food, made only with the freshest ingredients.
The Food
Spectacular touches enhance each item on the menu. The made-to-order guacamole is a chunky mix of creamy avocados, cilantro, onions, peppers and tomato served in a hollowed-out avocado shell. A hint of cinnamon permeates the delicious tamales that come piping hot inside their corn-husk wrappers. The carne asada, nestled inside a chile tortilla, packs a flavorful punch with its perfectly seasoned meat. End with a slice of pure decadence and order the flourless Callebaut chocolate cake.

This place is amazing, it has a good vibe, it is relaxed, warm, and the music is nice...but the food is out of this world. I go at least once a week. I crave the Corn Casserole, the Red Chicken Quesadilla, the Guacamole, and the specials. I hope they bring the Mole back, because it was the second best Mole I have ever had . (Sorry, the best was a black Mole in Mexico.) The drinks are also great. The margarita, is the best Margarita in Hampton Roads. (As for the person who is complaining about the Mojito. The mojitos are generally excellent, they are not as good as the ones you get at La Floridita in Havana or perhaps Puerto Rico, but I suspect this has more to do with the fact that you are in another world down there, than anything else. ) As for the service. They are very efficient and low on the chit chat, because the Restaurant is generally packed, but they are so sweet (and good looking) at Luna Maya. All of them. I love it there...if you want to avoid the crowds and get good service, go on a wednesday.
Pros: Food, Drinks, Ambiance, Value
Cons: They are busy...perhaps they can open Luna Maya II?

One of my favorite restaurants in Norfolk. Great, casual atmosphere; good service and wonderful food. Great date location.
