Editorial Review for Chrysler Hall – by Kelli Caplan

The Stage
Chrysler Hall is the city's top performance venue. Situated in the middle of downtown, this cavernous yet elegant hall packs in the crowds. Between performances by the Virginia Symphony, patrons enjoy Broadway shows, such as Cabaret, Fiddler on the Roof, and Annie.
The Best
This popular performing arts hall was built in 1971 and splits its 2,363 seats into two levels. Make sure you get an eyeful while you're here, because cameras and recorders are not allowed.

The Rest
It's easy to find Chrysler Hall. The Hall's within sight of the mega-mall MacArthur Center and is within walking distance of many downtown hotels and attractions.

I was very dissapointed in this experience with Chrysler Hall. After spending a lot of money on 4 tickets to go see Ron White....on my birthday.....we found ourselves in a distracting environment where we were unable to even hear what the entertainer was saying. During the ENTIRE show latecomers were allowed in. People were strolling in late even up until about 15 minutes prior to the end of the show. People continued to be let in and as they were coming in would carry on very loud and disruptive conversations. I have never seen such rude behavior in my life. Why does Chrysler Hall allow this? In the past when attending plays there, once the doors closed they would not allow latecomers to enter until intermission. When did this change? There were so many out of control, intoxicated groups around us that held their own private, LOUD, conversations as if they were sitting in their own living room. NOT TO MENTION the constant ringing of cell phones around us. Nobody ever mentioned at the beginning of the show to turn off cell phones, either. I don't believe I will return to Chrysler Hall after that experience. It is pretty bad when you leave the show and feel like you would have been better served to stay home and put the DVD in. We missed just about the entire show because we weren't able to hear it and that is just ridiculous.

Cons: parking, latecomers allowed to stream in throughout entire performance, noise level not controlled by staff

In May we traveled 450 miles for our daughter's graduation from Eastern Virginia Medical School, which was held in Chrysler Hall. Immediately after the ceremony, we wanted to take a family picture in the lobby because a storm was blowing up outside. We were told that we had to leave the building immediately, because there was going to be another "show". My oldest daughter remarked that the graduation was not a "show". The attendant replied, Honey, they are all shows to us." And she insisted that we leave or else she would not be able to have any lunch. We were forced outside into the rain storm and the door was locked behind us! What a rude ending to such a meaningful event for our family. We stood outside in the pouring rain until our ride pulled up.

Pros: location, size, acoustics

Cons: rude staff
