Editorial Review for Magnolia Steak – by Michele McCole Moss
The Scene
The bar's volume gets loud with sports on TV and people playing pool, but the spacious dining room offers a quiet setting for dinner conversation. If the weather's nice, sit at one of the outside tables to watch the foot traffic of cosmopolitan Ghent.
The Food
After a serving of the addictive tobacco onion rings (the name comes from the size not the ingredients) you're ready for the star of the show: certified Angus beef. In addition to the whopping 40-ounce porterhouses and delicate filets, a variety of eclectic dishes fill out the beefy menu. The Texas Caesar salad zings up an old classic with sweet corn and sun-dried tomatoes. Tortilla-encrusted chicken and bourbon-marinated salmon are just as scrumptious as the beef dishes. Generous sides like caraway carrots pair perfectly with the stellar steaks.

Not impressed with the steak. Not particularly tender nor tasty. Average service. The kicker to make it a WILL NOT RETURN restaurant was the atmosphere. Musty, smoky, and dirty. Gross. Gets into your clothes and hair like you have been bar hopping all night, not like you have been eating an overpriced steak.
Pros: Local
Cons: Smoky, dirty

We have lived in Virginia Beach for nineteen years and haved past by the Magnolia Steak House on many occasions while traveling through Norfolk. We have heard great things about it, so we decided to try it out. I will be the first to say I was sadly dissappointed. In order to enter the restaurant you must pass through the bar (e.g., smoking section), strike one. In reviewing the menu we quickly noticed that the prices were comparable to those of a Ruth's Chris Steak House. That would have been ok, but the ambiance was sorely lacking. The building is old and had a musty smell to it. The tables and bench seating in the booth we were given was old looking, nicked up and was very out of style. With their prices, I would have expected much, much more. My wife ordered a sirlon steak which came with one side. She ordered a cheesy potatoe as her side. To add a salad was another $3.95. The steak was about 3oz. in size and the potatoe was cold in the middle. I on the other hand had scallops which were served with linguini in a blue cheese based sauce and was quit tasty. While the quality of this dish was good, the quantity left a lot to be desired. You can find a much better value for your dollar at places like Outback or Texas Road House. If the prices aren't a problem, then spend your money at a place like Ruth's Chris as the more modern ambiance makes you feel more like you got something special for your money.
Pros: If you are willing to pay the big bucks, steaks are probably pretty good
Cons: Old musty smelling building, old furnishings, poor ambiance/atmosphere
