Editorial Review for Orapax Inn – by Lori Surago Logan
The Scene
Lilting Greek music wafts from outdoor speakers beckoning would-be diners into the unpretentious neighborhood inn. Inside, against a wood-paneled backdrop, green ivy coils around Greek carpets hanging above simple wooden tables. Low ceilings and dusky lights create a cozy lodge for families, college students and the occasional couple-on-date. The service is prompt and friendly.
The Food
The no-frills menu centers on traditional Greek dishes like pungent, mouthwatering dolmades, spicy beef-filled grape leaves served in a tart egg-lemon sauce, and rich spanikopita oozing spinach and feta. Sweet pastitso--elbow macaroni, zesty meat sprinkled with cinnamon covered in a rich b?chamel sauce--is a local favorite. Robust eggplant mousaka and grilled lamb-and-vegetable kabobs are great for sharing. The pizza, some of the best in town, tops fresh, chewy crusts with anything from traditional pepperoni and cheese to lamb, spinach or feta.

My wife and myself have been going to the Orapax once a week for at least 15 years. We always get the medium or large double cheese pizza (we can't get off it!) and it's always delicious. Had about 12 friends in town, for about 4 days, and went there. Had a taste of a number of other dishes and they were great also. In fact my friends insisted that we go back there on another evening before they left town. They loved it. Service is always good and the people who work there are always nice and courteous.
Pros: Great food in a restaurant tucked away in a residential area of the city. Ambience is great.
Cons: None

I just moved to the area, and went out to eat with longtime West Ghentiens Jim and Wendy Hazel at the Orapax. I had my heart set on stuffed grape leaves, that I first tasted at the base of the Acropolis in Athens. However, I was entranced by the Lamb Entrada.....what a surprise. The meal was well cooked, the service impeccable. I even sampled the Aries beer, good stuff. I will definitely be a return visitor. Great food, great prices, great service. A West Ghent classic!
Pros: Inexpensive, delicious, bohemian
Cons: choices, choices, choices
