Editorial Review for Steinhilber's Thalia Acres Inn – by Steve Rocca
The Scene
This charming cabin (built in 1937) with its cozy fireplace has long been a local dining favorite. The wooden deck has lovely views of the Lynnhaven River; an open dining room with 20-foot A-frame ceilings recalls a small church from days gone by. The small bar off to the left serves as a holding area; with 60 different kinds of wine and 30 brands of beer, it's not a bad place to wait.
The Food
Since 1939, this Virginia Beach mainstay has built a following by having the best jumbo fantail shrimp in Tidewater. In addition to its reputation, the split shrimp comes with a house orange sauce that's like Thousand Island dressing, but better. Other seafood entrees fare just as well. Lobster bisque gets smooth flavoring from a shot of bourbon; filet of flounder--golden on top; snow white in the middle--is overstuffed with shrimp, oysters or backfin crabmeat. Family recipes predominate. Don't bother asking for the secret ingredients. Just sit back and enjoy them.

While this was my first time dining at "steiny's", it will definitely not be the last. The food was extraordinary and the service was exceptional. Although we happened to arrive on one of the busiest days of the year (the Saturday before “Valentines Day”), not only did the manager, Brady, take a personal interest in making this a very special evening by seating us at a table near the fireplace. But, while we were waiting in the bar area for the table to come available, the bartender, not only enthusiastically shared some of this establishments “history and family values” (including employees that have worked here for up to “50” years), but, also checked on the status of our table (without being asked to do so). All in all, we had a wonderful experience here at "steiny's", and would recommend this establishment to anyone desiring an evening to remember. Clearly, it is easy to understand why this restaurant is a favorite for the “locals”, and worth “searching out” if you’re “visiting” Virginia Beach and get a craving for some “extraordinary seafood” (especially the fried shrimp).
Pros: Exceptional food, service, view, parking
Cons: Worth the wait

While service is always wonderful here at "steiny's", everything else is a waste of time and money. My husband an I both work in the industry, and this is by far the most unsanitary, disgusting place I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing. Not only was our food thrown together on its plate without a hint of presentation, but a long blond hair garnished my filet, and au jus was sprinkled onto my husbands pants as it was dripping off the side of the plate. When the owner, Brady, came over to see how we were doing, I explained my discomfort with the hair and such. He gave me almost a dumbfounded look as if to say, "well what do you want me to do?", and didnt even offer something to take its place. Eventually his mother, Jeannie, offered to take off $20.00 from the bill. And expected this to appear generous. As a manager, I understand the needs and wants of those dinning and spending a lot of hard earned money. The last thing I would ever do, had I been in the owners possition, would be to make my guests feel like they were an unwelcomed burden. Clearly I will not be returning, and I sincerely hope that you take this into consideration next time you have a craving for fried shrimp.
Pros: Parking, service, view
Cons: Spiders in the bathroom, unsanitary, lazy management
